First, introduce yourself on the Discussion Board and write briefly about your experience in Early Childhood Education and Special Education and what you would like to learn from this course. Second, the reading for this week presents a lot of useful information about early childhood education. Choose 1 fact or takeaway idea from the materials and write about it. Comment a minimum of twice on a minimum of 2 different days – focus on deepening the conversation by asking a question, for clarification, or reflecting on your experience as it relates to the topic.

In this module, you will learn about the history of special education in early childhood. You will go over the past laws and changes which have gotten us to where we are today. We will look at trends in early childhood special education. Please reach chapter 1 of our textbook and complete the Introduction Discussion assignment.

Learning Outcomes

After this module you will be able to: 

1. Discuss how to empower families by being knowledgeable about federal laws and their influence on young children and how family history and cultural background are important in the decision-making process for young children with disabilities.

2. Discuss purposes, methods and procedures for identifying early childhood students with disabilities and evaluating their progress in inclusive classrooms while also giving an account of diversity and demonstrate the implications of diversity with regard to assessment, eligibility, programming and placement.

3. Describe the procedures for developing, implementing and amending Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Hi Everyone,

This week’s course reading was very informative and interesting. I agree with the author that “it is critical families and practitioners in early childhood special education never lose sign of the fact that the infant or toddler is a child first” (Cook et al., 2020).

I believe that children with special needs should be given the same education opportunities as all other children. Unfortunately, many teachers concentrate on the student’s disability and focus on what the child cannot do. Instead, the teachers should focus on the potential and abilities of the child. It is essential to focus on what the child can achieve and modify the instructions to help them achieve the established goals.

I see every child as a unique person with their weaknesses and strengthens. An intentional teacher will always view a child with special needs respectfully and positively.
