PEERS POST:

Hi everyone,

The difference between checks and balances and the separation of powers is that the separation of powers is separating powers into different branches of government and these branches would be legislative, executive, and judicial. Checks and balances is what keeps one branch from having more power than any other branch and makes sure one branch can’t make a decision that puts them in more power than any other branch. All branches of government are supposed to be equal and the way to keep the government from becoming a dictatorship we have separation of powers and checks and balances to let everyone have a say in what passed and what is not.

One real world example of checks and balances is the way the president of the United States can veto a bill, however, congress can vote to override the veto with a two-thirds vote. If a bill is passed the president of the United States can choose to veto the bill based on the fact that he thinks it may be unconstitutional and unjust but if congress does not agree, they can vote to still pass the bill no matter what the president thinks. The impact of this is that a bill that is unconstitutional will not be passed and will not affect the United States.

A real world example of how the Constitution directly protects individual and group rights is how it protects freedom of speech. More recently we have seen a lot more protests going on especially when it comes to the rights of African Americans and equal rights and they are protected by the constitution to protest without any repercussions.

An example of balance of power is how the legislative branch overruled Donald Trumps travel ban from other countries into the United States. Congress got the two-thirds vote to overrule the executive order so the travel ban would not be able to take place. This shows balance of power in the US government and how not one person or branch has enough power to just do whatever they want and everyone has to agree before a decision is made.
